Adam Morgan scored his second British Touring Car Championship victory of the season at Donington Park, with the CPRL driver comfortably ahead of NAPA Racing UK ’s Ash Sutton in a safety car-interrupted race.

At the start, Morgan assumed the lead as Toyota’s Josh Cook dived inside the other CPRL Mercedes of Daniel Rowbottom to take second at Redgate corner, with Sutton tucking in close behind to secure third on the run through the Craner Curves.

The race had to be neutralised behind the safety car at the end of the lap, however, after Lewis Gilbert’s BMW was turned into the barriers at the Melbourne hairpin and rolled.

The incident began following contact from Team VERTU ’s Tom Chilton on the run from the Fogarty Esses, with Gilbert becoming a passenger in his BMW thereafter, the car hitting the barriers hard before digging in and rolling over on the grass.

It took four laps at slow speed to clear up the mess, with racing resuming on lap six, although the safety car was called on just one lap later when Chilton’s car cut out at Mc Leans, before he restarted the Hyundai.

Racing resumed again on lap eight and Morgan was able to pull clear of the chasing Cook, whilst Sutton was under pressure from Rowbottom.

However, Cook’s challenge faded for good on lap 11 when he slowed with a gear lever issue, promoting Sutton to second.

Sutton, however, lacked the TOCA Turbo Boost to challenge Morgan at the front, allowing the Mercedes driver to claim his second win of the season and the first time he has won two opening races in a season.

Sutton was second, clinching his 14th podium of the season to extend his championship lead to 94 points.

The podium was completed by Laser Tools Racing ’s Gordon Shedden, who dived inside Rowbottom for the place on the penultimate lap after the latter lost pace late in the race.

That loss of pace also saw Cammish steal fourth at the Melbourne Hairpin on the final lap, with slight contact between the duo, leaving Rowbottom to take fifth.

Laser Tools Racing ’s Árón Taylor-Smith was the leading driver on the hard tyre in sixth, seeing off a challenge from Power Maxed Racing ’s Dexter Patterson, who took seventh.

Team VERTU ’s Ricky Collard was eighth, having fought past team-mate Tom Ingram into the Fogarty Esses on the second restart lap, leaving Ingram to take the chequered flag in ninth.

Power Maxed Racing ’s Mikey Doble completed the top ten.
