Mikey Doble claimed victory in the final British Touring Car Championship race of the weekend at Croft, as the top four drivers in the championship were all in the wars.

The top ten were reversed for the final race at a dry and now-sunny Croft, handing the front row of the grid to Power Maxed Racing duo Doble and Aiden Moffat.

At the start, Moffat challenged Doble around the outside at Turn 1, but Doble held his line and prevailed in the lead.

Further back, NAPA Racing UK’s Dan Cammish had to defend against Team VERTU’s Ricky Collard into the first corner. As Cammish hit the kerb, his Ford bounced into Collard, sending the Hyundai into the gravel, before Collard slid into Cammish’s team-mate Ash Sutton, who also collected CPRL’s Daniel Rowbottom.

Further around the corner, the mayhem continued; Sam Osborne hit Árón Taylor-Smith’s Toyota, sending the Irishman across the grass on the inside of the corner and into the Ford of Lewis Selby, completing a quartet of crashes for the NAPA team in just two corners.

The safety car was called for five laps to recover the cars of Collard and Taylor-Smith, whilst Sutton, Cammish and Selby returned to the pits for repairs.

For Sutton, it was effectively race over (although he later returned to the track to post the fastest lap and claim a point) whilst Cammish fell off the lead lap but rejoined the race.

At the restart the drama continued, although this time it was the Audi of Moffat getting roughed up. On the hard tyre, and lacking the pace of some of his rivals, Moffat was hit by Tom Chilton at Sunny In, losing second, also opening the door for Laser Tools Racing’s Gordon Shedden to follow into third.

Moffat was then hit by WSR’s Charles Rainford in the complex and by the end of the lap had dropped to fifth.

The field at this stage was tightly bunched, with a charging Tom Ingram trying to cut through in his soft-shod Hyundai.

Going into the Jim Clark Esses on lap nine, Moffat, Rainford and Josh Cook went three abreast, with Cook passing both whilst Rainford checked up on the brakes. The latter then made slight contact with Ingram, who was on the outside, sending the two-time champion spinning across the grass at high-speed.

Having caught some air in the process, and picked up damage, Ingram limped back to the pits and retired from the race.

Doble, meanwhile, was now almost two seconds clear of Chilton and controlled the remainder of the race, securing the third win of his BTCC career.

Chilton and Shedden completed the podium, unable to make inroads into the Audi drivers lead.

Cook was fourth, whilst CPRL’s Adam Morgan claimed fifth, having crossed the line ahead of Cook but losing out to a five-second penalty for exceeding track limits – the Mercedes driver being one of seven to be penalised late in the race.

Moffat claimed sixth, the top driver on the hard tyre, ahead of Restart Racing duo Chris Smiley and Daniel Lloyd in seventh and eighth respectively.

The top ten was completed by Power Maxed Racing’s Dexter Patterson and CPRL’s Rowbottom.
