Swindon Powertrains closed another chapter of its British Touring Car Championship history after last weekend’s season finale at Brands Hatch – although the engine builder remains open to future opportunities.

The company, founded in 1971, began its association with the BTCC in 1989 when Vauxhall entered the championship, and it continued this association through the peak of the Super Touring era.

After a period away, Swindon returned in 2010 when it developed the first generation of the TOCA customer engine – a contract it operated until the end of the 2021 season.

Notably, Ash Sutton won the 2020 and 2021 titles in a Swindon Powertrain-equipped Infiniti.

Since then, the company has remained involved thanks to a partnership with the EXCELR8 Motorsport-run Hyundai team, taking its second stint to 17 consecutive years.

That pairing yielded two drivers’ titles – in 2022 and 2025 – whilst the company has also worked with Independent outfit Restart Racing since it switched to running Hyundais in 2025.

At its peak as the TOCA engine supplier, Swindon Powertrains supplied 21 of 32 cars on the grid in 2015.

“We are extremely proud of the contribution made by the entire team at Swindon Powertrain, and we would like to thank everyone in the BTCC for the success we have enjoyed together,” says Swindon Powertrain CEO, Raphaël Caillé.

“The performance, reliability and cost efficiency of our engines have enabled more drivers and teams to challenge for titles, helping the BTCC remain one of the most demanding and competitive touring car championships in the world.

“Motorsport is always evolving. Changing regulations and long-term commercial considerations inevitably influence technical direction and supplier choices.

“We are proud of the value and competitiveness our package has delivered over many years, and we look back on our time in the BTCC with enormous pride and gratitude.

“We’ve gained considerable experience, brought numerous innovations to the series and will be ready to win again with the right partner.”

The company remains open to returning to the championship in the future, whilst also continuing its activities in Australian Supercars and high-performance restomod engines, electronics and components.
