After bolstering his hold on second in the standings with victory at Silverstone, Tom Ingram insists he remains focused on race wins and results rather than championship runner-up honours.
Now that the British Touring Car Championship drivers’ title has been settled in Ash Sutton’s favour, attention turns to who will finish runner-up in the standings.
However, it’s not something which the current second-placed driver – Tom Ingram – says he is particularly fussed about.
“Ultimately, I want to win,” said Ingram to TouringCars.Net after he won the final race of the day at Silverstone. “I’m not too fussed about finishing second. But at the same time, we obviously have to make sure we can get the best results.
“Whilst it would not be the thing I’d be proudest about to say we finished second, it would still be a good result.
“Over the course of the season, we’ve done a very good job. There’s still points to play for, results to get and wins to be had. So, we’ll be trying just as hard.”
Ingram currently sits five points ahead of NAPA Racing UK’s Dan Cammish prior to Brands Hatch.
Of the two, Cammish arguably has the better overall track record on the Brands Hatch GP circuit, with five wins to Ingram’s four. However, Cammish only has a further two podium finishes on the circuit, whilst Ingram has 11 podiums on the GP layout, with seven of those coming since 2022. In the same time period, Cammish only has only had two rostrum visits at the circuit.
Form-guide aside, Ingram is expecting to also have to battle against Sutton in order to maintain his runner-up position in the championship.
“Ash may well play the team game. I’d be disappointed if he didn’t do that. So, that might be fun. But ultimately, we’ll focus on ourselves, try and drive around in circles as fast as we can, and see where we go.”
With only four podium finishes so far in the second half of the season since Thruxton, Ingram admits that his rivals appear to have made bigger gains during the season than Team VERTU.
“We’ve seen in the second-half of the year, the performance of other cars has increased and we’ve not been one of those.
“Maybe it was a good summer break test or something, I don’t know. For us, we’ve lost a bit of performance in the second-half of the year, and there’s not a lot we can do in terms of what we can control to improve on that.”
With that in mind, Ingram admits he is already looking forward to the end of the season.
“I’ll certainly be pleased to see this year finished and be able to stop it and restart it again for next year.
“Then we can focus on improving what we’ve got from this year.”
