NAPA Racing UK’s Dan Cammish was pleased to end the 2026 British Touring Car Championship season by inheriting a win, after what he described as an ‘up-and-down’ season.
The 37-year-old went into the weekend vying with Tom Ingram for the runner-up spot in the drivers’ championship, with five points separating the pair ahead of the event.
In the end, with Ingram claiming a double win on Sunday, Cammish missed out, although he did secure a victory of his own in the final race after Ricky Collard ahead of him was penalised for a safety car restart violation.
Cammish was resolute about Collard’s infraction which ultimately handed him the win, although he admitted to TouringCars.Net that he felt he lacked the pace to pass Collard on the road.
“He went and stopped; we all know you’re meant to stay at the same speed after the safety car,” explained Cammish.
“He accelerated hard up to the last quarter and then braked quite hard, which nearly caught me out. I thought, ‘has he actually gone and just forgot?’
“He definitely went, foot flat to the floor. I could see him moving away from me and then next minute he didn’t.
“I hit the brake and I did get a chance to look and I saw a couple of people swerve in avoidance.
“It’s like on a motorway – if it’s already caused an effect a couple of cars behind me, it’s only going to get worse as it goes down the chain.
After Collard had earlier also been involved in a controversial defence of his lead with Cammish’s team-mate Ash Sutton, he was also aware that he may not have needed to overtake the leading Hyundai on the road.
“After the incident with Ash, I was asking ‘do I need to overtake him here or have we got grounds to say that was probably a step too far?’
“Ultimately, I probably didn’t quite have the pace without the [TTB] button; we were good lap-for-lap when we don’t press, but he did have an overlap on me.
“I think [the boost] been quite powerful this weekend, and we’ve not quite had the sparkle that we’ve had around here in the past.
“But we’ve brought home a good result, it’s nice to be back on the podium, and the team has done a great job.
“I’ve brought home third [in the championship], which is where I expected and thought I could be.
“I’ve got to find a way to get a bit more out of [the car], and there’s lots of ways I can think I can go away and do that. We’ll see what next year brings.”
Cammish lamented what he perceived as some changes in the mid-season, which he believes cost him performance whilst also seeing his rivals move forwards.
In particular, Cammish highlighted a 20 millibar boost reduction which the team received after the third event at Snetterton.
“It’s been a bit up and down. This is quite a political game, the British Touring Car Championship.
“Having Ash as a teammate, who got off to such a good start, we then got turned down [in turbo boost] almost immediately.
“In the second-half of the season, it’s clear that something’s changed with our competitors, and we weren’t as competitive ever since really.
“Certainly, me, Sam [Osborne] and Lewis [Selby] got hurt by that. Ash still manages to find a way round it, but he and his car crew can do that. We can’t always do that.
“I’m good enough to bring the car home in good results and keep racking up the points.”
Cammish was surprised at how dominant Ingram had been in the final weekend of the season, with a win in race two being Ingram’s third in a row, sealing him the runner-up spot and resigning Cammish to third.
“We came here and Tom Ingram’s not had that performance all year, and then can win two races back-to-back with no boost.
“There’s no way we were doing that this weekend. He wasn’t doing that last time [at Silverstone], so sometimes I just don’t quite understand.
“It would have been nice to try and get on top of Tom this year, but it just didn’t quite happen, so we’ll have to have a think about what we can do next time.
“I’ve come to the conclusion that touring cars are designed to catch you out, and he [Sutton] does a really good job of [avoiding] that.
“If you look up and down the grid, we all ebb and flow. We have good days, bad days, because it’s designed to do that to you; it’s not straightforward. There are all kinds of pitfalls that we all fall into.
“Ash and the team of Ash have figured out a way to circumnavigate them better than everybody else, and that’s on top of just being generally sometimes the fastest guy out there. It all adds up.
“I’m going to go away and do my homework on how to get a little bit of that.”
