Power Maxed Racing’s Aiden Moffat delighted in claiming his first Race to Pole victory of the season in the British Touring Car Championship at Brands Hatch on Saturday.

Moffat was the fastest driver in both single-lap qualifying pace and race pace in the later Qualifying Race as the Scot went on to claim his second outright BTCC pole position.

The Audi driver made a strong start to the race and managed his lead ahead of Team VERTU’s Tom Ingram to give himself the best-possible starting position for Sunday’s races.

“My first front-wheel drive pole,” said Moffat to TouringCars.Net. “The car feels brilliant; I’m really happy with how the car is.”

Moffat pointed out that he had been quickest on both the soft compound tyre in the timed qualifying session and the medium compound tyre in the subsequent race.

“I was confident going into the qualifying session, but to be the quickest in the initial sessions, on one-lap pace, and also win the race and post the fastest lap when there were two different tyre compounds shows we’ve got the pace kind of regardless of the situation. It’s very promising for tomorrow.”

The 30-year-old believes he and the team have made big strides forward in recent weeks with the new Audi, hot on the heels of their best-weekend of the season last time out at Silverstone, and says his victory was not simply because of having more TOCA Turbo Boost.

“I was quick at Silverstone and the boost [differential] is massive around there. I don’t think it’s as big [at Brands Hatch].

“It’s still always going to help, but there are only seven drivers that are affected, and even for us, there’s a couple of points where we wasted boost as well because we probably only used about 17-18 seconds worth.

“There are a lot of people that are in the same boat. Someone like [Tom] Ingram or Ash [Sutton] would of course be a much bigger threat if they had the full boost but you’re still fighting everybody else and you still have to beat everybody else.

“The big thing is that we’re learning the car constantly every weekend and the car is improving every weekend.

“We’ve kept making positive steps and changed the car a lot from practice to qualifying, just with things we’re constantly learning. The big thing is the car’s been getting better and better all year.

“It’s a very different race [on Sunday], when you’ve got someone like Tom [behind]. There will be a lot more laps that are equal with the way the boost works, but I think we’re in a good position to give it a roll.”

Although Moffat is mathematically still in contention for the Independent Drivers’ title, and team-mate Mikey Doble is leading the way, he says he is only focussing on victory on Sunday.

“To be honest, I couldn’t care less enough about the Independents. It doesn’t mean anything to me.

“We’re going out there to try and win a race, and at the very least get a podium, so that’s all I’m focused on.”

“We’re starting on pole position after dominating Saturday and we’re going for a win.”
