Aiden Moffat led home a Power Maxed Racing 1-2 in the opening British Touring Car Championship race at Silverstone, but it was team-mate Mikey Doble who scored the win after Moffat was handed a penalty.

Doble started the race from pole position, but after two formation laps in light drizzle, when the lights went out it was Moffat who made the better getaway and took the lead, as Doble briefly dropped to third.

Doble then retook second from Daryl De Leon on the run to Brooklands, and duly followed his team-mate for the remainder of the 22-lap race, staying within a second of the leading Audi.

By lap nine, Moffat was on his final warning for exceeding track limits, and the Scot managed a further nine laps before he was hit with a five-second penalty for repeated exceedance.

That handed a straightforward win to Doble, who earned his third win of the season and his second in succession.

Team VERTU’s Tom Chilton claimed second, having passed WSR’s De Leon on the second lap, whilst the podium was completed by Speedworks Motorsport’s Josh Cook in third.

Cook had actually fallen back to seventh on the opening lap, and dropped as low as eighth by lap five, but after recovering two places on the next lap he fought past WSR’s Charles Rainford and De Leon to assume fourth, which became third when Moffat’s penalty was applied.

Moffat therefore was classified in fourth, ahead of De Leon in fifth and Laser Tools Racing’s Gordon Shedden in sixth, who had moved ahead of the BMW driver three laps from the finish.

Rainford was seventh, ahead of the leading CPRL Mercedes of Adam Morgan in eighth, whilst the top ten was completed by Laser Tools Racing’s Árön Taylor-Smith and CPRL’s Daniel Rowbottom.

With two laps to go, NAPA Racing UK’s Ash Sutton had been running in 11th and was on course to take the title, but he dropped behind Restart Racing’s Chris Smiley and finished in 12th, meaning he now needs just one point to secure a record-breaking fifth drivers’ title.

Contact between Taylor-Smith, Sutton and Team VERTU’s Tom Ingram at Brooklands on the second lap resulted in the latter dropping to the back of the pack (save for the slow Osamu Kawashima) but he managed to recover to 13th by the finish.

NAPA Racing UK’s Dan Cammish was running in 11th ahead of Sutton at mid-distance, but a technical issue on his car saw him pit on lap 15 and fall two laps down.
